The Syrena Polish Folk Dance Ensemble of Milwaukee, WI, was founded in 1975, and is a proud member of the International Institute of Wisconsin. Since 1979, the Ensemble has been under the direction of Ada Dziewanowska, an internationally known Polish folklore authority and dance choreographer and author of a comprehensive work entitled, Polish Folk Dances and Songs: a Step by Step Guide. More recently, Syrena has added the choreographic skills of Michael Malich, a trained folk dancer and alumnus of the Duquesne Tamburizans. Syrena performs regularly at Milwaukees Holiday Folk Fair, the oldest and largest indoor multi-ethnic festival in the nation. The Syrena ensemble was among five groups chosen by a panel of international dance experts as the "best of the best" of the Holiday Folk Fair. In addition to its participation in Milwaukees Polish Fest and a great variety of local events, Syrena has performed in many U.S. cities, including Toledo, St. Louis, Detroit, Philadelphia, Chicago, Baltimore and San Francisco and internationally, in Canada, Japan and Poland. The core of Syrena's appeal lies in its 40 talented and exuberant dancers, trained over a period of many years. Syrena takes pride in its over 300 costumes, all authentic, hand-crafted, ornate and colorful. The ensemble presents a wide variety of Polish folk songs and dances, performed in 11 different Polish folk dance suites. Syrena's diverse repertory includes everything from the rugged mountaineer dances to the stately polonaise, the fiery mazurka and the lively krakowiak. Syrena performs year round for public and private events, leaving audiences with a smile after every show. Witness for yourself the tremendous audience appeal which is created when the full Syrena ensemble performs their energetic songs and dances. The Syrena Polish Folk Dance Ensemble has its permanent headquarters, rehearsal studios, and costume storage facility at the former St. Hedwig's School gymnasium. This facility is over 120 years old and is the second oldest Polish parish in the state. It is a protected historical building in Milwaukee, constructed of Cream City brick and located on Brady Street, the heart of the old east side Polish community. The Syrena Polish Folk Dance Ensemble, Inc. is an independent, non-profit, tax-exempt and tax-deductible (501c) organization. They are affiliate members of the International Institute of Wisconsin, the Polish Folk Dance Association of the Americas and the American Council of Polish Cultural Clubs. Syrena holds three annual fund-raising events which contribute to the promotion and dissemination of cultural tradition. Each winter Syrena sponsors Bal Maskowy, held annually at the elegant Crystal Ballroom in the downtown Hilton-Milwaukee. This event attracts 425 guests for an enjoyable evening of dinner, dancing and performance entertainment in the elegant traditions of the Polish European royal court. In spring, Syrena hosts a huge Easter buffet for 500 guests, where a traditional Easter meal is served with countless polish dessert pastries. Again, the Easter buffet is complete with the reenactment of numerous Polish Easter traditions and authentic Polish song and dance entertainment. In early fall, Syrena sponsors Dozynki harvest festival at Blessed Sacrament Parish Hall, complete with a Harvest procession, great food and authentic entertainment.
